Pride Month is celebrated in June every year to acknowledge the LGBTQ+ community, commemorate the Stonewall Riots and celebrate the progress towards equality while continuing to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
It's an important time for individuals to feel proud of their identity and support the wider community.
What are the Stonewall Riots?
Pride all began with the Stonewall Riots in 1969 after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City during a wider civil rights movement, where the LGBTQ+ community at the time finally fought back. The resistance spilled onto the streets and led to the first Pride marches.
It has continued to be a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, with Pride celebrations serving as a way to remember and honour the Stonewall Riots and legacy of those who fought for LGBTQ+ rights.
