Pride: How to be an ally

Come together

Being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community isn't about grand gestures or being perfect—it's about showing up, listening, and supporting in simple, meaningful ways. Whether you're just starting out or looking to deepen your allyship, here are some tips to help you make a positive impact.

1. Educate yourself

Start by learning about the LGBTQ+ community. Read articles, watch documentaries, follow LGBTQ+ influencers, and understand the history and struggles. This knowledge will help you be more empathetic and informed. Remember, it's not the responsibility of LGBTQ+ folks to educate you - take the initiative!

2. Use inclusive language

Language matters. Use the names and pronouns people prefer. If you're unsure, it's okay to ask respectfully. Avoid assumptions about someone’s gender or sexuality and steer clear of derogatory terms. Simple changes in your vocabulary can make a huge difference in making others feel respected and included.

3. Speak up

If you hear derogatory comments or jokes, speak up. Silence can be interpreted as acceptance. Politely but firmly, let others know that such behaviour is not okay. Your voice can help create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

4. Show up

Support LGBTQ+ events and causes. Attend Pride parades, volunteer at LGBTQ+ organisations, or donate if you can. Your presence shows solidarity and helps amplify the voices of the community.

5. Listen and validate

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is listen. If someone shares their experiences or feelings with you, listen without judgment or interruption. Validate their feelings and let them know you’re there for them. A little empathy goes a long way.

6. Challenge stereotypes

Challenge your own assumptions and biases. Recognise that LGBTQ+ people are diverse and their experiences are not monolithic. Avoid stereotypes and treat everyone as an individual with their own unique story.

7. Be visible

Being an ally isn’t just a private act - be visible in your support. Wear rainbow pins, display inclusive stickers, or share supportive posts on social media. Visibility can signal to others that they are safe and supported around you.

8. Support LGBTQ+ businesses

Whenever possible, support LGBTQ+ owned businesses. Your dollars can help sustain and grow LGBTQ+ communities. Plus, it’s a great way to discover new products and services that might become your favourites.

9. Educate others

Use your platform to educate others. Share what you’ve learned with friends, family, and colleagues. By spreading awareness, you help create a broader culture of acceptance and support.

10. Keep learning and growing

Allyship is a journey, not a destination. Stay open to learning and growing. The LGBTQ+ landscape is always evolving, and so should your understanding and support.

Remember, being an ally is about progress, not perfection. It’s okay to make mistakes as long as you’re willing to learn from them and do better!
