5 things to remember when packing for university

Alessia's tips for international students

Whether you're preparing to move or you're already settling into your new room, here are some tips that are definitely worth knowing! Instead of a list of obvious essentials, let's break down what you actually need to bring when moving to the UK.

1. Check what your accommodation is providing

It's important to check what your accommodation already provides so you don't end up bringing something you won't need. This will save you from lugging an extra bag when travelling and could save you money if you want to shop for uni essentials.

2. Ask around for suggestions

Whether it's a friend or on social media, there are students who have been there and done that. They'll know the best spots, what you'll actually need, and when to put the stack of notebooks down! Ask real students and real people who have travelled to the UK/abroad for suggestions - they're the experts!

3. Choose versatile clothing

UK weather is very unpredictable. It can go from rainy, cloudy, and chilly to sunny, with everyone racing to grab a spot in the beer garden. To adapt to the weather, bring a variety of clothes you can layer and wear in any season.

4. Prioritise real essentials

People will consider many things essential, like a cosy, fluffy blanket, but these items are the fundamental items you actually need to travel and for you to be okay:

✅ Documentation

✅ Medications

✅ Chargers/electronics

Anything like this is a priority - they aren't just important, but they actually help you live day-to-day.

5. Pack personal decor

Lastly, pack some personal decor to make your accommodation full of life and to make you feel more at home ❤️

Remember that these are essentials, and if you forget something small, that's okay. You're going to be moving to a big city, and you'll be able to buy many things once you arrive so don't feel pressured to bring every single thing with you!
