Sustainable Sanctuary: Your Carbon Footprint

Posted 2 months ago

The 2050 plan

We’d like to make you aware of our sustainability efforts, and exactly what we’re doing to work towards being carbon-neutral by 2050.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading the tips in our other Sustainable Sanctuary posts as much as we’ve loved revealing them!

To summarise everything we’ve shared, we’d like to offer some advice on considering your overall student impact.

What is my carbon footprint?

Working out your own individual carbon footprint is a great place to start on your sustainable journey. And luckily, there’s a website called Giki Zero that makes it super simple! All you have to do is answer a few questions and they’ll produce a personalised estimate of your carbon footprint using their science-based carbon calculator.

How can I reduce my carbon footprint?

In addition to our other posts and tips to recycle and reduce your plastic use and resource consumption, you can use Giki Zero to explore over 100 steps to find ways to reduce your carbon footprint that suit your lifestyle and budget. You’ll also have access to a handy checklist that reminds you of your goals and helps you keep on track.

Can I make a wider impact?

We’ve found that sharing your own experiences and advice is the best way to make a wider impact. Take ownership of your carbon footprint contributions and be proactive when it comes to making small changes to help our planet. And spread the word! Sharing even one tip with friends will multiply the positive change.

Where should I start?

Revisit our previous Sustainable Sanctuary posts for a full list of our top tips. For now, keep these in mind when moving into your student accommodation:

  1. Don’t throw away clothes that don’t make the cut for your move to uni – recycle!
  2. Shop second-hand where possible.
  3. Invest in a reusable bottle.
  4. Reduce your carbon footprint by cooking at home (and spend less money on Deliveroo!).
  5. Pop on a jumper before cranking up the heating if you’re feeling a bit chilly.

If you’ve enjoyed these posts, please let us know over on our social media. And, as always, if you have anything to add, share your tips with us and we’ll send you a ÂŁ25 voucher if we feature it in our termly green newsletter.

We’ll be working throughout the year to remind you of the small ways in which you can help our planet and make a more positive, sustainable impact. Good luck, and we look forward to meeting you soon!
