Climate Change is one of the biggest challenges we’re facing on Earth today and it's up to us to do everything we can to minimise the damage to our planet.
Reducing our carbon footprint is one step we can take to tackle the climate crisis and this can be done by saving as much energy and water as possible. The good news is that there are some really simple and quick ways to reduce the amount of energy and water you use on a daily basis, take a look below.
💡 Steps to Saving Electricity
- Turn off your appliances at the wall
- Don't forget to turn off lights and appliances when you leave a room and switch off everything when you leave for the break
- Put your computer/laptop to sleep during breaks
- Rather than putting your heating on, layer up when it gets chilly
- Don't leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary
- Avoid wasting heat by keeping doors closed and making sure any windows are shut
💧 Ways to Save Water
- Remember to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
- Make sure taps don't drip or leak. Should you have a leak in your accommodation, please report it to the maintenance team
- Aim for shorter showers and only fill the kettle/saucepan for the amount you need
- If you have any house plants, use any leftover water to water them
- Don't flush cotton buds/makeup wipes etc. Not only is it a waste of a flush but it's damaging to the environment too
⚡️ Tips for Saving Energy
- Avoid opening the oven door during cooking, this reduces the temperature by 25º
- Cover your saucepans with their lid. It will reduce the amount of energy used by 90% and cook your food faster
- Cook together! Rather than individually turn the oven on and off, time it so you're using the oven together
- Cut your laundry trips down to one wash a week and wash at a lower temperature (30º)
Being green in your accommodation is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for your health, wellbeing, and budget.
