Most students never think it will happen to them, but being locked out of your flat or house is more common than you think. Here are some tips on how to handle being locked out:
1. Keep calm
This might sound cliche but try not to panic. Of course, being locked out of your own place can be worrying but there are plenty of things you can do in this kind of situation. Don't let yourself get worked up over something that can be fixed!
2. Try to contact your flatmates
If you live with others, contact them to see if anyone else is in the property. Usually, a flatmate will be able to let you in and if you've left your keys in the flat make sure you don't forget them next time you nip out. However, if you've lost your keys you can always contact your accommodation the following day to get a new one.
3. If you live alone or can't reach your housemates
In a situation where you can't get ahold of anyone or live by yourself, you could think about staying at a friend's house (even if they're a little angry that you've woken them up). In trouble, your friends will be willing to lend you a helping hand and make sure you have somewhere safe to stay.
4. Contact your halls of residence
Do you really think we'd leave you out in the cold? We're here for you! All of our sites have a 24-hour support network and there will be someone who can get you back into your flat. The 24-hour site number for your residence will be available in the reception area or in your resident guide, so it's a good idea to note this down when you arrive...just in case.
