Ramadan is a significant time for many Muslim students. By showing a little extra consideration, you can help your flatmates balance their studies, sleep, and spiritual goals.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri (lunar calendar) and during this time Muslims will fast, pray and reflect. They fast during the day, meaning they won't eat or drink during the hours between dawn and dusk. Ramadan lasts one month (17th Feb - 18th/19th Mar), so there are a few things to consider when supporting your flatmates and fellow students.
Check in
It's important to check in with your flatmates during Ramadan. As you can imagine, their energy levels will dip, and that could have an impact on their productivity. So a little practical will go a long way. For example, if it’s their turn to take the bins out or clean the kitchen, offer to swap shifts with them. This might just be exactly what they need to get through a hard patch.
Be flexible
Fasting will change their entire body clock. They will usually eat breakfast before sunrise and eat again after sunset, so if you're planning activities, be considerate of their fasting hours. You could plan an activity that doesn't involve food/drink, or even plan something in the evening around their hours. They will appreciate the extra effort of factoring in their new schedule.
Just ask!
Everyone experiences Ramadan differently. Some students might want to stay busy to keep their minds off hunger, while others might need more downtime. Don't be afraid to ask them what they need, as there isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' guide you can follow.
Don't be afraid to learn
Muslims welcome questions and value your interest in being open to learn more about their religion and culture. Learning could be your way of showing support too. It’s not awkward to ask about the significance of the month or how they’re feeling.
