World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness and taking action for the protection of our environment. This day encourages us all to reflect on our habits and make changes towards more sustainable practices. For you guys making environmentally friendly choices doesn't have to be complicated or disruptive to daily routines. Here are five super easy ways to integrate greener habits into your life without really trying too hard.
1. Switch to a reusable water bottle and coffee cup
One of the simplest changes you can make is to ditch single-use plastic water bottles and disposable coffee cups. Investing in a reusable water bottle and a coffee cup isn't just good for the planet - it can also save you money. Many coffee shops offer a discount if you bring your own cup, and tap water is often freely available around campus for refills.
2. Power down and unplug
Energy conservation is something many of us overlook in the hustle of daily life. Make it a habit to turn off your lights, computer, and any other electronics when you're not using them. Go a step further by unplugging devices when they're fully charged or not in use, as they can still draw power.
3. Take advantage of public transport and cycling
Utilising public transport or cycling (or simply walking more) instead of driving/taxis is another effortless way to reduce your carbon footprint. Most universities are well-connected by public transport and often offer incentives for cycling, such as secure bike storage and bike-sharing schemes. Choosing these alternatives not only helps the environment but is also great for staying active.
4. Recycle and reuse
Recycling systems are a staple on university campuses, and using them effectively is one of the easiest ways to be more eco-friendly. Take a moment to familiarise yourself with the local recycling rules - what can be recycled and how to sort waste correctly. Also, be mindful of reusing items like paper and plastic bags, and embrace second-hand shops for clothes, textbooks, and other essentials.
5. Watch your water usage
Being mindful of water use is often overlooked but crucial. Simple actions like taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, and only running the washing machine or dishwasher with a full load can significantly reduce water waste. These habits, once formed, require little to no effort to maintain!
