Beat the heat this summer by focusing on hydration and sun protection! With temperatures rising, it's important to remember how to stay safe in the sun whilst still enjoying yourselves.
Hydration and sun protection checklist
✅ Carry a bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you and refill it frequently throughout the day! Top tip: Fill half your bottle with water and leave it in the fridge overnight. Then, in the morning, top it up with water. This will be a lifesaver on hot days!
✅ Sun cream: Apply SPF 30+ about 20 minutes before heading outside, and remember to reapply it every 2 hours.
✅ Limit peak sun: Avoid long, direct sun exposure during peak UV hours (typically between 11am and 2pm). If you're sunbathing in a local park, find a spot with shade to have breaks, and remember to wear a hat and sunglasses.
Staying cool in halls
If you're staying in halls over summer, here are a few tips on how to stay cool throughout the day and night:
☀️ Keep your blinds and curtains closed throughout the day to block direct sunlight from heating your room.
☀️ Keep your windows closed when it's hotter outside, and open them early morning or late evening when the air is cooler.
☀️ Electronics can emit heat, so it's always a good idea to turn off gaming consoles, laptops and other appliances when you're not using them to avoid any extra warmth.
Look after yourself
Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Rapid pulse
Don't force yourself to stay outdoors in the sun if you feel unwell. If you or a friend feels unwell, move immediately to the shade, sip cold water and remove any heavy layers of clothing.
When the sun's out, life feels 10x better, but it's very important to be safe and make sure you're drinking plenty of water and applying plenty of sunscreen before heading outside! ❤️
