Avoid any unnecessary fines!

Cleaning your room before moving out of Halls might seem like a chore, but it’s essential if you want to avoid charges for leaving your accommodation messy. To help make this task quicker, more effective, and a bit more fun, here are some top tips to leave your room spotless and keep that deposit safe!

Gather your cleaning kit

Your flat will come with some vital kit such as a vacuum cleaner, dustpan and brush, etc, but you will need to buy a couple of extra bits to be able to meet the cleaning standards required:

  • Microfiber cloths
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Bin bags and recycling bags
  • Rubber gloves

To save some cash, consider sharing these cleaning supplies with your flatmates - you'll likely all be in the same boat so why not work together!

Create a checklist/schedule

Create a clear checklist/schedule to manage your cleaning without stress. Breaking down the tasks into manageable chunks will make the whole process feel a lot easier. You can then spread these out over your available time and tick off tasks as you go.

Clear the clutter

We'd recommend starting with packing away your belongings. This makes it easier to clean every nook and cranny of your room, saving time by not having to move things around during the cleaning process.

Recycle and donate

As you pack, separate items you no longer need into three categories:

  • Trash for items that can’t be recycled or donated.
  • Recyclables for things that can go to your hall's recycling point.
  • Donations for items that could be useful to someone else. Check out local donation points like the British Heart Foundation.

Cleaning techniques to follow

Here’s how to ensure every part of your room meets inspection standards:

  • Clean from top to bottom to avoid redoing work.
  • Start with dusting the walls, then move to other surfaces using your all-purpose spray and cloths. Dust from back to front and don’t forget the skirting boards and room corners.
  • Tackle the insides of drawers and other furniture pieces.
  • Clean mirrors with hot water and a microfiber cloth.
  • Finish by vacuuming the floor, making sure to reach under furniture and into all corners.

Better together

If you work with your flatmates to do any communal areas, the whole job will be easier, take less time and be more fun! Divide up the tasks fairly, listen to some tunes and you're on to a winner!

By following these tips, cleaning your room will be less of a hassle and more of a breeze!
